Many Golden Age comic strips used their title panels as little surrealist playgrounds, but none were as fun as Will Eisner’s The Spirit. Designer DJ Food compiled some of the best moments of the strip’s run, where the title becomes part of the architecture, or scraps of paper floating down into the city. This panel, where our beleaguered hero is having his identity literally (but comically) chipped out from under him, really sums up the mood of the entire strip. Check out more of the panels here!
